Perspective

A life changing personal development lesson is one on perspective. How we feel,  does not come from an EVENT that happens. How we feel, comes from our INTERPRETATION OF AN EVENT that happens. It is easy to peg a situation as being a good thing or a bad thing for us. Sometimes, it is beneficial to take a longer perspective.

Here’s a story to illustrate the point. A wise man won the lottery many years ago. His friends and family celebrated with him and said, “That is fantastic! This is so good.” The wise man smiled and said, “I don’t know about that.” He enjoyed his wealth for many years. He helped many people, traveled the world, and bought everything he ever wanted, including a big, beautiful home. He even bought a brand new helicopter. One day he crashed his helicopter due to a mechanical failure and nearly died. He ended up puncturing his lung and breaking his back. His family and friends visited him in the hospital and said, “This is so bad, you poor thing! How terrible this is.” The man said, “I don’t know about that.” While he was in the hospital, in the middle of the night, his beautiful home burned to the ground from an inescapable forest fire. His friends and family said, “Oh, thank God you were here in the hospital last night!” The man replied, “I don’t know about that.” And so the story goes.

I like to live life from the perspective of faith. I may not understand certain situations in my life, but I do understand that everything that happens to me is for me. It will serve me in some way for the better. This perspective keeps me grounded and continues to base my life in faith. How can you interpret a not so pleasant event right now with this level of understanding?
